3 Ways to Make Math Review Fun

Warm Up Reviews

The first thing I like to do is start my math reviews with a review warmup. The warm-up I use  has 5 questions. One question from each goal in the math standards. Students get an answer sheet to record their answers for the warm-ups all week. I like to take the sheets up daily and grade them, so I know what topics need more review. I go over the problems each day after I have taken up the papers.  Sometimes, before I go over the problems, I have students get in groups and let them talk about the answer and come up with one answer that the group agrees on. Students learn a lot from being able to discuss which answers are correct and which are incorrect.

Students use their notebooks to reference any topic they need to. We have created 6th, 7th and 8th grade math review warm ups. Use the links below for more information.

In Class Game Reviews

Happy schoolchildren at a classroom. Education.

The second thing I like to do is have students play games to review topics. It is harder to keep student’s attention at the end of the year. Playing games keep them motivated and excited to continue working.  I have a few different games that I use to review. These games work with any set of questions. You can take a favorite review sheet, task cards, a set of standardized questions from school net or create a set of your own.

Computer Game Reviews

The third thing I like to do is use games like Quizlet Live, Gimkit and Blooket can help students review formulas or topics that they need to practice. These games work best with problems that can be worked quickly. Examples would be estimating square roots, integer operations, finding slope, and learning formulas.

In conclusion, I think we as teachers see the importance of review. It is good for us to assess topics and spend more time on the standards students are not remembering. Students may not think review is as important as teachers do but finding activities that they enjoy will help.
