First Day of School Math Activity
When the first day of school comes in the fall it is always exciting to see a new group of students. The students in your math classes may not know each other even if they have had classes together before. One first day of school activity that I like to do is a People Search or Find Someone Who activity. This helps my students get to know each other.
A “Find Someone Who” activity gets students up and moving as they find out things about their classmates. The teacher can also participate as they monitor the activity. This is a perfect math activity for the first day of school.
Directions for “Find Someone Who” Activity
To do this activity you need a “Find Someone Who” worksheet. You can create one, find one on TPT or use the one that I created (the link is at the bottom of the post). The sheets have different statements on it that will help students find out interesting facts about each other.
1). Give each students a sheet. Students are to walk around the room and find a classmate to pair up with.
2). Once they have paired up they are to look at each other’s sheets and find a statement that is true about them. They should sign their name in the correct box.
3). Students will continue finding classmates for each statement. They can only use each person one time.
4). They are finished when their sheet is full or the teacher calls time.
Wrapping Up the “Find Someone Who” Activity
After we finish this first day of school activity, I like to call out certain statements to see who that statement is true for. I always learn a lot about my students during this time. It also allows the other students to learn something about their classmates since they will not be able to talk to everyone in the class during the activity.
