Digital Scavenger Hunts for Math

Using Digital Scavenger Hunts in the Classroom

I love to use Scavenger Hunts in my classroom and I have lots of them! Sometimes due to time constraints, I don’t have time to use them all in my classroom. Just recently l have started to use them digitally.

I use the images from printable Scavenger Hunts to create a Google Form. I add the image to each question on the Google Form. You can also type the questions instead of adding the image.

To do this you should have some experience with creating a Google Form. If you are not familiar with creating Google Forms you can check out this blog post for step-by-step directions.

How to Create a Digital Scavenger Hunt

When I create a digital scavenger hunt I want students to get the question correct before they can go to the next question. This continues until they have answered all of the questions. In order to do this you have some special settings in your Google Form.

1). Under settings your form should NOT be set as a quiz.

2). Create your first question as a short answer. Add your image if you are using one.

3). Click on the 3 dots found at the bottom right of the question and choose response validation.

4). If your answer is a number choose “number” and “equal to” from the drop down menus. Type in the answer to your problem. You have other options for your answers, such as text and regular expressions. If your answer contains numbers and letters or operations you can use regular expressions. If the answer is text select the text option.

5). Type in “Try Again” under custom error text.

6). Click required.

7), On the right tool bar click the equal sign at the bottom.

8). From the drop down menu choose “after section continue to section 2”. I put the number of the question they are to go to next. Look at the options and decide what works best for your activity.

9). On the last question I have my students type in their name using a short answer questions and have a message that says ‘Congratulations! You have completed the Scavenger Hunt!”

10). Make a copy of the activity and do the activity yourself to check for any mistakes.

Using Digital Scavenger Hunts

Use Digital Scavenger Hunts for Warm Ups

You can have students complete a short digital scavenger hunt at the beginning of class as a warm-up. Use them to review important concepts from the day before or to review important math topics you have already covered.

Digital Scavenger Hunts for Homework

Digital Scavenger Hunts are perfect for homework. Many times in math students will not do their homework because they are having a hard time understanding it. With a digital scavenger hunt students have to get each question right before they can proceed to the next question. This makes the assignment self-checking.  By having the answers provided students will be able to determine if they are on the right track. If they solve a problem and their answer is not correct they know they have done something wrong when solving the problem.

Digital Scavenger Hunts for Classwork

Digital scavenger hunt activities can be used during class to review a new concept that has been taught. Students can work by themselves, in pairs or in groups to complete them. This is a great way for students to get practice in math class.

Conclusion

Creating digital scavenger hunts and using them with your students is a great way to to practice math concepts. Students are able to use the format on the cards to help them determine if they are solving the problems correctly.
